Mirror Lab

This picture shows a Foucault test on a 0.65-meter experiment epoxy telescope mirror I tested. This mirror appears perfectly smooth and uniform to the human eye but the Foucault test reveals surface irregularities much smaller than a wavelength of light. This mirror has deviations larger than one wavelength and a great deal of asymmetry in its shape. That effect causes one side of the mirror to form a different image than the other side. Not good.
